Following the War he entered the Medical Department at the University of Michigan. After practicing medicine in the new towns of Northern Michigan, he entered the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College and graduated in 1870. Dr. Whitfield moved to Grand Rapids in 1872. An Elder in the Church of Christ, he was very active in the religious and civic affairs of the community.
