2008 HERITAGE HILL HOME TOUR
TOUR HOUSE DETAILS

Saturday and Sunday, October 4th and 5th, 2008

Hours: 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday
Noon to 6 pm on Sunday

545 Fountain NE: Antiques, artwork and an eclectic mix of old and new decor make for a historically fun trip through this 1892 Queen Anne-style home. A two-story turret, a three-story tower, an eyebrow window and front and side entrance porticos make this home a poster-child of the architecturally flowing and appealing lines that make up the Queen Anne design.
312 Morris SE: Built in 1908, this classic Four-Square designed by architects, Osgood & Osgood, exudes Prairie-style influences. The current owners have complemented the house's interior with many Stickley furniture pieces giving it a very period-like feel. Works by local artists, an original Pewabic Pottery-tile floor in the enclosed front porch and oriental accents round out this stylish home.
528 Lafayette SE: This 1888 Victorian cottage is adorned with several stained and art glass windows original to the home, as well as Eastlake-style influences inside and out. The current owner's handy-work, artistic eye and care for this old treasure is evident throughout.
440 Logan SE: The significance of this English-style house built in 1914 is based as much on its enormity as on the family that built it. Living large is an understatement at this home. From its sweeping tiled sun porch to the gracious foyer and staircase, this home showcases grand entertaining of its time.
455 Madison SE: The Belknap House, named for its most prominent owner, Charles E. Belknap, was built in 1878. The features of this Craftsman-style house are many, including a French-tiled foyer, an imported Italian white-marbled fireplace and, in the master suite, what is thought to be one of the first showers installed in Grand Rapids.
218 Union SE: Years and years of adorable little kittens and cats - as many as 70 at one time -- nearly doomed this 1907 Craftsman-style home to burial in piles of used cat litter. Woodwork, plaster and flooring were too urine-soaked to reuse and odors were so imbedded that masks were needed to enter the home. Only the meticulous work and love for the house by its current owner in the early 1980's saved this home from the dreaded scourge: "demolition by neglect."

57 College NE: A wonderful little Queen Anne-style home built in 1892 nearly gasped its last breath when a fire tore through it in 1994. Through the efforts of an organization the home's owner helped establish - the North College Block Club, a group of local craftsman rebuilt it to even better than the pre-disaster condition while carefully reproducing the intricate details that originally decorated the house.
265 Paris SE: This circa 1866 home has a sad tale of abuse. It was on the verge of becoming a gaping hole in a resurging neighborhood block before being adopted and purchased by a group of neighbors calling themselves the Paris Partners. The once facetiously-named "Paris Palace" was returned to its single-family status and stands proudly today, like 57 College NE, a true neighborhood-inspired success story.
