Heritage Hill Association Board of Directors

Heritage Hill Association’s 2007 Report to Neighbors

Neighborhood Description: Heritage Hill is one of the largest urban historic districts in the country. It was the first "neighborhood" of Grand Rapids and is adjacent to downtown. Its 1,300 homes date from 1848 and represent over 60 architectural styles. These were the homes of lumber barons, teachers, judges, and legislators who shaped our city’s future. Today, the population is equally diverse. Professionals, trades people, artisans and students; singles, couples and families, renters and homeowners; people of all colors, backgrounds and incomes make Heritage Hill home.

Purpose: The Heritage Hill Association formed in 1968 to stop a variety of urban renewal projects that would have demolished 75% of the neighborhood. Its purpose is to provide neighbors a way of collectively building a healthy, historically preserved community where people can live and work in a secure and stable environment. Issues include land use, crime and safety concerns, preservation, parking and traffic, education and other quality of life issues.

Services/Events: On-going services include a bi-monthly newsletter mailed to all 5,000 households; weekly listings of available Heritage Hill apartments; free home security surveys; community organizing; block club assistance; issue alert fliers; community resource referrals; landlord tenant rights and responsibilities and other assistance. Annual events include the Heritage Hill Home Tour held the first full weekend of October; Heritage Hill Night Out Picnic in June; and the December Holiday Potluck and Annual Meeting.

Meetings: Monthly HHA Board meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM at Davenport College, 415 East Fulton in the Robert Sneden Academic Lecture Hall. Other issue and committee meetings are organized as needed. All HHA meetings are open to the public.

Membership:

Residents: All residents of Heritage Hill are members of the Association. There are no fees required although an annual pledge drive is conducted. Residents names and addresses are requested so they can be added to the membership list.

Non Residents: Non Heritage Hill residents can become members by submitting dues. The annual dues are as follows: Individual $20; Family $25; Commercial $35; Contributing $100.
