Each of the 1,300 Heritage Hill structures, complete
with histories and photos from 1969 and 2003-4 are a few clicks away.
You can browse the neighborhood in many different ways and view houses
by address, by block, by date of construction, by architecture and
architectural significance and by original owners and occupants.
Most all the addresses in the neighborhood have at least 3
documents associated with it – the architectural survey cards, a 1969 photo and
a 2003-4 photograph. There are a few instances on our boundaries that were not
included in the initial survey of Heritage Hill and these will not have the
survey card or 1969 photos. Also note that there are a handful of houses whose
survey card and/or photo are missing.
The architectural survey cards were compiled in 1969 and 1970 in
response to the planned demolition of 75% of Heritage Hill. These research cards
were required by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for nomination and
acceptance to the National Register. Heritage Hill received this designation in
1971 and that effectively stopped the wrecking ball. The research information
displayed on these cards is the best that could happen for the time. It was a
massive pre-computer project and with further research, we have found some
errors. Dates of construction were gathered from City Directories and may be off
a year or so. Architectural styles are somewhat subjective and most Heritage
Hill houses are a combination of styles. What is listed may or may not be
precise. The architectural significance line item was completed by the National
Trust. The order of ranking is Outstanding, Excellent, Notable, Worthy of
Mention. The ranking reflects a purity and uniqueness of style. The vast
majority of houses have no architectural significance marked.
